YouTube is set to make its biggest update to channel monetization rules in nearly eight years. The Google-owned video platform has announced changes to its YouTube Partner Program (YPP), with new eligibility requirements coming into effect from February 1, 2027.

The changes will mainly affect creators who are trying to qualify for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. Existing YPP members will not be affected by the new entry requirements. YouTube says the move is aimed at rewarding active creators and creating more opportunities for channels that consistently produce content. The company also expects to pay creators more in 2027 than it did in 2026.

Under the new rules, creators applying for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing from February 2027 will have to meet higher thresholds. New applicants will need 1,000 subscribers along with either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days.

This means creators will have two routes to qualify. Those focused on long-form videos can work towards the watch-hour requirement, while Shorts-focused creators can target the higher view threshold. The change is significant because YouTube has not made such a major update to its YPP requirements since 2018. However, not every monetization feature is being affected. YouTube has confirmed that the eligibility requirements for Fan Funding and Shopping products will remain unchanged.

What Happens To Existing YouTube Creators?

Creators who are already part of the YouTube Partner Program will not suddenly lose their YPP membership because of the new entry requirements. However, Shorts creators will face a separate requirement for continuing to earn revenue from Shorts.

Starting February 1, 2027, existing creators will need 10 million qualified Shorts views within the previous 90 days to remain eligible for Shorts advertising and subscription revenue sharing. If a channel falls below that number, it will remain part of YPP. The creator can continue earning from eligible long-form content.

Shorts revenue sharing will resume automatically once the channel crosses the 10-million-view threshold again. YouTube says creators already generating significant revenue from Shorts are unlikely to be heavily affected by this change.

YouTube Shorts Monetization Gets A New Threshold

Shorts have become a major part of YouTube’s creator ecosystem. The platform is now introducing a specific performance threshold for Shorts revenue sharing. The important point is that falling below the 10-million-view requirement does not mean losing YPP completely.

Instead, the impact is limited to Shorts revenue sharing. This could encourage creators to focus more closely on consistent Shorts performance. It also puts greater importance on sustained viewership rather than occasional viral videos.

YouTube says it is also looking beyond traditional advertising revenue. The company plans to introduce new incentive programmes for creators who do not reach the 10-million-view Shorts threshold. These programmes could include bonuses linked to YouTube Shopping, incentives for brand deals and earnings boosts for creators who help start and grow trends. More details about these programmes are expected to be announced later.

The 8,000-hour and 20-million-view requirements apply specifically to new creators seeking ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing.

YouTube Premium Lite Expands Further

Alongside the YPP changes, YouTube is also expanding its Premium Lite subscription. The company plans to make Premium Lite available in all countries where YouTube Premium is offered. The subscription provides uninterrupted viewing of most content, along with offline and background playback features.

Creators can also receive a share of revenue generated from Premium and Premium Lite subscriptions. YouTube says creators receive 55% of the allocated revenue for long-form videos and 45% for Shorts. In India, Premium Lite is priced at Rs. 89 per month. The plan provides ad-free viewing for most videos and works across smartphones, laptops and smart TVs.

Why The Changes Matter For Creators

The new rules could make monetization more challenging for creators just starting out. Reaching 8,000 qualified watch hours is a significant target for long-form channels. The alternative of 20 million qualified Shorts views is even more demanding for many smaller creators. At the same time, YouTube is making it clear that monetization will increasingly depend on consistent audience engagement.

The platform is also trying to diversify how creators earn money. Shopping, brand deals, fan funding and incentive programmes could become more important alongside traditional advertising. YouTube is not alone in changing its creator economy. Other major social platforms have also been adjusting their payout systems to place greater emphasis on original and engaging content.

What Creators Should Do Now

Creators who are planning to join YPP after February 2027 should start building their audience well before the new rules arrive. For long-form channels, watch time will become even more important. Creators should focus on videos that keep viewers watching rather than simply chasing clicks.

Shorts creators, meanwhile, will need to pay close attention to consistent viewership. A single viral video may not be enough to maintain the required performance over a 90-day period. Creators should also explore YouTube Shopping, memberships, fan funding and brand partnerships instead of depending entirely on ad revenue.

Conclusion

YouTube’s new monetization rules represent the platform’s first major YPP eligibility update since 2018. From February 1, 2027, new creators will need 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million qualified Shorts views to qualify for ad and Premium revenue sharing.

Existing YPP creators will remain part of the programme, although Shorts monetization will come with a 10-million-view threshold. For creators, the message is simple. Consistency, original content and strong audience engagement will matter more than ever.
