Anthropic Introduces Claude Text Watermarking To Detect AI-Generated Content

Anthropic is preparing an invisible watermarking system for Claude-generated text that can help determine whether Claude was involved in writing or editing content without adding visible markers or changing its quality.

Anthropic is preparing to introduce an invisible watermarking system for text generated by Claude. The technology is designed to help determine whether Claude was involved in writing or editing a piece of content. Unlike traditional watermarks, users will not see any symbols, labels or unusual characters in the text.

Anthropic says the system will have no practical impact on the quality, readability or creativity of Claude’s responses. It will also not add hidden characters or extra tokens. The company is introducing the technology as part of its efforts to comply with the EU AI Act and its rules around marking AI-generated content.

How Claude’s Text Watermark Works

Large language models generate text by choosing the next word from a list of possible options. In many cases, several words can make sense in the same sentence. Claude normally uses randomness to decide between those options.

Anthropic’s watermarking system changes the source of that randomness. It uses a secret key along with words that appeared earlier in the passage to influence these low-stakes word choices. The resulting text still reads naturally, but the sequence of words contains a pattern that can be checked using the appropriate key.

This means the watermark is not a visible marker. Instead, it is a statistical pattern spread across the generated text. A detector can then calculate the likelihood that Claude was involved in producing the passage. Anthropic stresses that the system does not simply force Claude to use particular words. The model can still choose between natural alternatives. The difference is in how the randomness behind those choices is generated.

Will Readers Notice A Difference?

According to Anthropic, they should not. The company says its internal testing found no impact on content, creativity or readability. It also points to research behind the SynthID-Text technique from Google DeepMind, which Anthropic says found no statistically significant quality difference between watermarked and unwatermarked responses.

The watermark is therefore designed to remain invisible during normal reading. Someone reading a Claude-generated article, email or other piece of text should not be able to identify the watermark simply by looking at it.

What Technology Is Anthropic Using?

Claude’s text watermark is based on a version of the SynthID-Text approach developed by Google DeepMind. The technique was described in a 2024 Nature paper and belongs to a broader family of watermarking methods that use the model’s word-selection process.

However, the system has important limitations. A watermark check can only estimate whether Claude was likely involved. It cannot prove that a human wrote the text, nor can it establish that another AI model was not involved. Short passages are also harder to identify because they contain fewer word choices. The longer the passage, the more information the watermark detector has to work with and the greater the confidence can become.

What Happens When Claude Edits Human-Written Text?

The watermark does not automatically mark every word in a document simply because Claude processed it. Anthropic says the watermark applies to words that Claude chooses. If a user gives Claude a human-written article and asks it only to correct grammar and punctuation, most of the original words remain untouched.

In such cases, there may not be enough Claude-generated material for the watermark to become detectable. Heavier editing or rewriting creates more opportunities for the watermark to appear. This distinction is important because a positive detection would not necessarily mean Claude wrote the entire piece.

What About Code?

Code presents another challenge for text watermarking. The technique works best when a model has multiple reasonable word choices. Code often requires exact outputs. A different token can break the code or change its meaning. Anthropic says watermarking will therefore generally be lighter in code. However, it can still appear in areas where the model has more freedom, such as comments. The company says this would have a negligible effect on the actual code.

Will Claude Watermarks Slow Down The AI?

Anthropic says users should not notice a meaningful performance difference. The company says watermarking has a negligible impact on model speed. It also does not require additional tokens, meaning the watermarking process does not increase the serving cost of Claude.

The watermark also does not contain personal information. It cannot be used to identify a particular user, organisation or conversation.

Why Is Anthropic Introducing Watermarking?

The main reason is regulatory compliance. Anthropic says it is implementing the technology to comply with the EU AI Act. The company also says it and several other major AI providers signed the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content in July 2026. Anthropic plans to apply the watermark globally at launch because it does not yet have a durable way to restrict the system by region.

Can Users Check If Claude Wrote Something?

Anthropic plans to offer a watermark detection API. However, the company says it is still working out the implementation details. This could eventually give developers and organisations a way to check whether a piece of content was likely generated or processed by Claude. The system should not, however, be treated as a universal AI detector. A watermark can indicate likely Claude involvement. It cannot establish complete authorship.

Can The Watermark Be Removed?

To some extent, yes. Anthropic says light editing may not completely remove the watermark. A complete rewrite that replaces every word can remove it. At that point, however, the company notes that it becomes debatable whether the resulting text should still be described as AI-generated.

Translations generated by Claude will also carry a watermark because Claude chooses essentially every word in the translated output.

What About Images And Other Files?

Anthropic is taking a different approach with supported files such as PNG, JPG and SVG images. These files can receive a cryptographically signed content credential in their metadata using the C2PA standard. The credential indicates that Claude was involved in creating or processing the file. It does not contain identifying information about the user.

Conclusion

Anthropic’s upcoming text watermarking system could make it easier to determine whether Claude was involved in producing or editing content. The system works behind the scenes and is designed to leave the reading experience unchanged.

It is not a perfect AI detector. Short passages, factual writing, code and lightly edited human content may provide too few opportunities for the watermark to become detectable. For users, the biggest change is largely invisible. For publishers, businesses and developers, however, Claude’s watermark could eventually provide a new way to verify the likely involvement of AI in digital content.
