Why Is Android 16 Coming Early?

For years, Google has released new Android versions in October, usually alongside the new Pixel phones. But this time they’re doing things differently. The company announced the surprise timeline during their recent Android show, separating the Android 16 announcement from the Google I/O event to give it more focus.

This early release means the beta testing phase will wrap up soon, and users won’t have to wait until fall to experience the new features and improvements.

Not all Android phones will receive the Android 16 update. The update targets newer models, so you will need to check if your device is eligible.

If you own a Google Pixel phone, you’re in luck! These devices will be among the first to get Android 16:

  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 7A
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8A

  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9A

The foldable phones aren’t left out either. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 will receive the update early. Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip 7, launching in July, will also run Android 16-based One UI 18.

What about the Galaxy S24 users? If you have a Galaxy S24 series phone, you might have to wait a bit longer. The update may arrive by the fourth quarter of 2025, following Samsung’s usual update schedule.

Other smartphone makers like Vivo and Oppo are also expected to offer Android 16 on their new devices, but these updates will likely arrive later in the year.

What’s New In Android 16?

Android 16 brings exciting changes that will make your phone experience better and smarter:

  • The user interface gets a major makeover with Material 3 Expressive Design. This means you will enjoy custom themes, smoother animations, and larger icons that are easier to read.
  • Quick settings become more user-friendly with the tile resizing option. You can now drag-and-drop to arrange them how you like, plus enjoy exquisite feedback through motion and haptic responses.
  • Similar to Apple’s feature, live activities will show real-time updates on your lock screen and notification areas. Imagine seeing your food delivery progress or navigation updates without unlocking your phone.
  • Android 16 will help you keep track of your battery health. You will get detailed information about battery capacity, helping you know when it might be time for a replacement.
  • Security gets a major boost with new features like factory reset protection, which prevents stolen phones from being reset. The advanced protection mode adds offline locking, USB port blocking, and scam detection.
