India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has recorded its strongest monthly performance yet, processing 25.47 billion transactions worth ₹31.53 lakh crore in October 2026. The latest figures also mark an important milestone: the average daily value of UPI transactions crossed ₹1 lakh crore for the first time.
According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), transaction volume increased 23% compared with October last year, while the total value grew 16%. The figures highlight how deeply digital payments have become part of everyday spending in India.
The growth comes during the festive shopping season, when spending on electronics, clothing, groceries, travel and online purchases typically increases.
UPI Crosses ₹1 Lakh Crore In Daily Transaction Value

The biggest highlight from October is the average daily transaction value of ₹1,01,707 crore. This is the first time UPI has crossed the ₹1 lakh crore mark on a daily average basis.
The platform processed approximately 822 million transactions every day during the month. That means UPI handled more than 82 crore transactions daily, covering everything from small neighbourhood purchases to large online payments.
In September, the average daily transaction value stood at ₹97,913 crore, while daily transaction volume was around 802 million.
The increase shows that UPI’s growth is not limited to the higher number of calendar days in October. Daily activity also increased compared with the previous month.
October Sets New Monthly Records For UPI
October also became the first month in which UPI’s total transaction value crossed ₹30 lakh crore. The platform processed ₹31.53 lakh crore in transactions, compared with ₹29.37 lakh crore in September. Monthly transaction volume increased from 24.07 billion to 25.47 billion.
The year-on-year figures are equally significant. Transaction volume increased by 23%, while transaction value grew by 16%. This suggests that UPI is handling more payments across the country, even as the average value of transactions grows at a slower pace than transaction volume.
Festive Shopping Adds to Digital Payment Activity
October is traditionally an important month for Indian retailers. Navratri, Dussehra and the build-up to Diwali encourage consumers to spend more on shopping, travel, food and household purchases. UPI benefits directly from this activity because it is accepted across physical stores, online marketplaces, small businesses and service providers.
A customer can use the same payment system to buy groceries, pay a restaurant bill, book a cab or complete an online purchase. The convenience of scanning a QR code has also made digital payments accessible to businesses that previously depended largely on cash.
However, festive spending is not the only reason behind UPI’s growth. The increasing availability of QR-based payments, better smartphone access and wider merchant acceptance have helped make UPI a regular part of daily transactions.
What The Numbers Mean For India’s Digital Payments Market
UPI’s October performance highlights the scale of India’s digital payments infrastructure. The platform is no longer used only for occasional online transfers. It has become a payment option for everyday purchases across urban and smaller markets.
The growing transaction volume also increases the importance of payment reliability, fraud prevention and customer protection. Banks, payment apps and technology providers must continue investing in systems that can handle higher transaction loads while protecting users against scams and unauthorised transfers.
There is also an ongoing discussion around merchant discount rates (MDR), which determine the fees applicable to certain merchant payments. The timing and scope of any proposed changes matter because merchants and payment providers need clarity on the cost of accepting digital payments.
