Apple is cutting the iPhone Air production by 80%. The company’s slimmest iPhone ever couldn’t get people to buy it. This is a massive reduction; it shows how badly the phone has performed.
2025 started with everyone talking about slim phones. Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge as its thinnest flagship. It flopped, and now there probably won’t be a next version. Apple followed in September with the iPhone Air. People were excited at first, but the sales numbers tell a different story.
iPhone Air Production Dropped By 80%

Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo shared some bad news about the iPhone Air. The phone fell short of what Apple expected from the market. Supply chain sources say production will drop 80% through the first quarter of 2026.
It gets worse. Several iPhone Air parts that take a long time to make will likely be discontinued by the end of 2025. Apple isn’t just slowing down; they’re moving on from this model. The phone simply didn’t connect with customers like other iPhone 17 models did. Kuo says the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models are seeing much higher demand and will fill the gap.
iPhone 17 Is Crushing It

While the iPhone Air struggles, the regular iPhone 17 is doing great. Nikkei Asia reports that Apple increased production of the base iPhone 17 by 5 million units. Sales jumped 31% compared to iPhone 16 models.
Why? The iPhone 17 has features people actually want. It comes with a 120Hz ProMotion display that makes everything look smooth. There’s a dual 48MP camera setup for better photos. And it has a faster processor.
Turns out people care more about what their phone can do than how thin it is. iPhone 17 Pro production is also going up to meet demand.
Another Miss After Mini And Plus
🚨 Apple Faces A Setback With iPhone Air! 🚨
The much-hyped #iPhoneAir seems to have missed the mark 😕 — reports suggest it has fallen short of Apple’s market expectations, leading to a massive 80% production cut till Q1 2026 📉#Apple #iPhoneAir #iPhone17 #TechNews pic.twitter.com/a8NCMddVJx

The iPhone Air joins the iPhone Mini and iPhone Plus on Apple’s list of models that didn’t work. The Mini was too small, the Plus didn’t catch on, and now the Air is too slim for its own good.
After Mini and Plus flopped, you’d think Apple would be more careful. But here we are again with another model getting massive production cuts.
What’s Next – Foldable iPhone?
Apple isn’t giving up on trying new things. The report says the company will enter the market of the foldable iPhone. But the design isn’t finalized yet, and several crucial components are still being worked out.
Samsung and other Android brands have been making foldable phones for years. Apple will need to do something special to make its version worth buying, especially after the iPhone Air disappointment.
