Bharti Airtel has officially cleared the confusion surrounding its Unlimited 5G Data benefit. After several subscribers reported that they were unable to use unlimited 5G while sharing internet through a mobile hotspot, the telecom operator has confirmed that the benefit is meant only for usage on the smartphone itself. Data consumed through a hotspot is not covered under the Unlimited 5G offer and instead counts against the regular data quota included in the user’s plan.

The clarification puts an end to weeks of speculation that began after users noticed hotspot-connected devices consuming their standard data balance instead of the unlimited 5G allowance. Airtel has now reiterated that this policy has always been part of its Unlimited 5G offering.

Unlimited 5G Benefit Is Limited To Smartphone Usage

According to Airtel’s terms and conditions, the Unlimited 5G Data benefit is available only when the data is consumed directly on a compatible 5G smartphone connected to Airtel’s 5G network.

If users enable a mobile hotspot and connect devices such as laptops, tablets, or another smartphone, the internet usage on those connected devices does not qualify for the unlimited benefit. Instead, the data is deducted from the regular daily or monthly data allowance available under the user’s prepaid or postpaid plan.

This means subscribers can continue enjoying unlimited 5G browsing, streaming, gaming, and downloads on their smartphones, but hotspot usage will reduce the standard data balance included with their plan.

Airtel’s Fair Usage Policy Sets A 300GB Limit

Apart from the hotspot restriction, Airtel has also confirmed that its Unlimited 5G plans are governed by a Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

Eligible users can consume up to 300GB of high-speed 5G data during a billing cycle. Once this limit is reached, the Unlimited 5G benefit will no longer be available until the next billing cycle begins.

The Fair Usage Policy is designed to prevent excessive network usage while ensuring a consistent experience for all subscribers. Although 300GB is a generous limit for most users, those who frequently stream 4K content, download large files, or use data-intensive applications may eventually reach the cap.

Why Users Were Confused

The clarification follows numerous complaints from Airtel subscribers who believed their Unlimited 5G plan would also cover internet sharing through mobile hotspots.

Many users took to social media after noticing that hotspot usage quickly depleted their regular data balance despite having Unlimited 5G enabled. Since the plans are marketed as offering unlimited 5G data, several customers assumed the benefit would apply regardless of whether the internet was used directly on the phone or shared with other devices.

Airtel’s clarification confirms that this is not the case. The unlimited benefit is tied specifically to the smartphone and does not extend to connected devices.

Subscribers Express Mixed Reactions

The clarification has received mixed reactions from Airtel users. Some subscribers feel the restriction reduces the practical value of the Unlimited 5G offer, especially for professionals, students, and travellers who often rely on their smartphones as portable Wi-Fi hotspots for laptops and tablets. They argue that true unlimited connectivity should include hotspot usage as well.

Others believe the policy is understandable from a network management perspective, as unrestricted hotspot usage could significantly increase network traffic and affect service quality for other users.

Regardless of the differing opinions, Airtel has maintained that the conditions have always been part of the Unlimited 5G offering.

What Airtel Users Should Keep In Mind

Customers using Airtel’s Unlimited 5G plans should now be aware of two important conditions. First, the Unlimited 5G benefit is available only on the compatible 5G smartphone itself and cannot be shared through a mobile hotspot. Second, the benefit is subject to a 300GB Fair Usage Policy during each billing cycle.

Users who regularly require internet connectivity for laptops or multiple devices should carefully evaluate their data requirements before relying solely on the Unlimited 5G benefit. Since hotspot usage consumes the regular plan quota, heavy users may need plans with larger bundled data or dedicated broadband solutions.

Conclusion

Airtel’s clarification removes any uncertainty surrounding its Unlimited 5G offering. While subscribers can continue enjoying unlimited high-speed 5G data on eligible smartphones, the benefit does not extend to internet sharing through mobile hotspots. Any hotspot usage will consume the regular data allowance available under the user’s plan.

The company has also reaffirmed that its Unlimited 5G plans are subject to a 300GB Fair Usage Policy per billing cycle. Although these conditions may disappoint users expecting unrestricted data sharing, they now provide greater transparency about how Airtel’s Unlimited 5G service works. Customers planning to use large amounts of data across multiple devices should review their plan benefits carefully to avoid unexpected data usage.
