PayPal has recently taken a big step in online shopping. The company has collaborated with OpenAI to be the first payment wallet built into ChatGPT. Beginning next year, you can shop and pay without leaving your chat window. The transaction combines the huge payment technology of PayPal and the 700 million weekly users of ChatGPT.
PayPal To Integrate Digital Wallet With ChatGPT

PayPal has signed a deal with OpenAI to integrate its digital wallet into the ChatGPT services. Consumers of the chatbot will have the opportunity to shop and purchase products and services on the platform.
PayPal CEO Alex Chriss confirmed the deal, stating that PayPal users and merchants will be able to use the platform starting next year. ChatGPT allows users to buy things, and PayPal enables merchants to put their inventory on the site and sell products.
Chriss, in an interview with CNBC, stated: “We have hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who can now simply use the PayPal button to buy with PayPal on ChatGPT and enjoy a safe and secure checkout.”
How Does The Payment System Work?

The arrangement is easy for both buyers and sellers.
PayPal Handles
PayPal manages background tasks that are related to the routing of merchants, the validation of payments, and others, in the case of sellers using ChatGPT. The individual merchants will not be required to open separate accounts with OpenAI, which is a major barrier to entry.
Security Measures
According to Chriss, consumers and merchants are checked by PayPal, and that would lower the risk of fraud by both sides. The payments can be made by the users through linked bank accounts, credit cards, or saved balances. The system comprises measures like package tracking and dispute resolution.
“It is not merely that a transaction may occur. This is a trusted group of merchants, the biggest merchant network in the world ever to be PayPal-verified, which has the biggest group of PayPal-verified consumers in a consumer wallet,” explained Chriss.
The Importance Of This Partnership

This partnership places PayPal in the ranks of the initial collaborators in OpenAI’s plan to enlarge the position of ChatGPT in e-commerce. The objective is simple: enable over 700 million weekly users to learn about and purchase products through conversations.
In the previous month, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT users would be able to shop with Shopify and Etsy sellers. Two weeks after that, they declared a partnership with Walmart in e-commerce. PayPal is the newest addition to this list of shopping options.
“It has become a new paradigm of shopping. I could hardly believe that agentic commerce will not be a significant portion of the future,” Chriss added.
What Buyers Get
Shopping through ChatGPT with PayPal gives you several advantages. You can complete purchases without switching between multiple websites or apps. Your payment information is secure through the PayPal verification system. You have access to buyer protection, including dispute resolution and package tracking. Plus, you can pay using your preferred method, whether that’s a bank account, credit card, or balance.
The process removes the usual friction of online shopping. Instead of navigating through different store websites, comparing options in tabs, and entering payment information repeatedly, everything happens in one conversation.
The Company’s Bigger Plan
PayPal is not limiting itself to customer transactions. The company also announced plans to broaden its internal use of OpenAI’s enterprise tools to improve product development efficiency.
PayPal is positioning itself as a key payment provider in the emerging field of agentic commerce. The company has formed partnerships with Google and Perplexity as well, showing its commitment to the new shopping model.
The Changing Face Of Online Shopping

Traditional e-commerce has always followed the same pattern — visit a website, search for a product, add items to a cart, enter payment information, and complete checkout. This process repeats across different stores.
The new model simplifies things considerably. You describe what you need in a conversation. Products from verified merchants get suggested. You click to buy with PayPal, and it’s done.
