OpenAI has secured one of the largest private investment rounds in history, signaling how aggressively the AI arms race is accelerating. With backing from tech giants and infrastructure leaders, the latest funding wave isn’t just about valuation; it’s about scaling the backbone of artificial intelligence globally.

From cloud infrastructure to dedicated AI chips, the new capital injection sets the stage for OpenAI’s next expansion phase. The company raised $110 billion in fresh funding, marking one of the biggest private investment rounds ever recorded. Amazon wrote the largest check at $50 billion, with Nvidia and SoftBank each putting in $30 billion. The deal values OpenAI at $730 billion pre-money valuation. The round isn’t even closed yet. OpenAI says more investors are expected to join, which could push the total even higher.

Amazon’s $50 billion leads the pack, followed by $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. To put this in perspective, OpenAI’s last funding round in March 2025 raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation. That was the biggest private round on record at the time. This one more than doubles it.

Here’s where it gets more interesting: not all of the money is cash. A big chunk comes as infrastructure services and computing credits, which makes sense given how expensive it is to train and run AI models at scale.

Amazon Deal Goes Big

The Amazon partnership is more than just an investment. OpenAI and Amazon Web Services are building a “stateful runtime environment” in which OpenAI’s models will run directly on Amazon’s Bedrock platform. If you’re a developer, this is a big deal. It changes how you can build AI apps and agents in the cloud.

The two companies are also expanding their existing AWS agreement by $100 billion. That’s on top of the $38 billion in compute services they’d already committed to, bringing the total AWS partnership to $138 billion.

OpenAI has promised to use at least 2 gigawatts of AWS Trainium compute as part of the arrangement. They’re also building custom models specifically for Amazon’s consumer products, which could mean AI features showing up across Amazon’s massive ecosystem.

Nvidia Brings The Hardware Muscle

The Nvidia piece is all about compute power. OpenAI has committed to using 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity and 2 gigawatts of training capacity on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems. That’s a massive amount of GPU horsepower for both training new models and serving them to users.

Details on the Nvidia partnership are thinner than the Amazon announcement, but the scale of the compute commitment tells you everything you need to know about OpenAI’s plans to expand.

Conclusion

OpenAI has framed the investment around a key shift happening in AI right now. “We are entering a new phase where frontier AI moves from research into daily use at a global scale,” the company said. “Leadership will be defined by who can scale infrastructure fast enough to meet demand and turn that capacity into products people rely on.”

The timing makes sense. AI companies are seeing explosive demand for their products, but serving millions of users requires exponentially more computing power than research alone. This funding round gives OpenAI the resources to scale infrastructure aggressively while competitors are still working out how to finance that level of expansion.
