Google To Change Android App Login With Zero-Tap Sign-In: What You Need To Know

Google will introduce Zero-Tap Sign-In for supported Android apps while enforcing stricter memory, bitmap and DEX optimisation requirements on Google Play from 2027.

Google is preparing a major change to the way users sign in to Android apps. The company is introducing a new Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement for apps distributed through the Google Play Store. The goal is simple. Users should not have to manually enter their credentials again when moving to a new Android phone.

At the same time, Google is introducing stricter memory and performance requirements for Android apps and games. Developers will need to optimise their apps for memory usage, bitmap consumption and DEX code. The new rules are scheduled to start rolling out from 2027.

Google Play Gets Stricter About App Performance

Google says the new requirements are designed to improve the overall Android experience. Apps that consume excessive memory can affect the performance of other applications. They can also contribute to throttling, slowdowns and unexpected app terminations.

Starting February 2027, apps and games distributed through Google Play will need to meet new thresholds covering dynamic memory usage, bitmap memory and DEX code optimisation. The requirements will apply based on the performance characteristics of Android devices. Google has indicated that the thresholds can evolve as the Android ecosystem changes. Developers will also be given time to comply when these requirements are updated.

Dynamic Memory Usage Will Be Monitored

One of the areas Google will monitor is dynamic memory usage. This measures the amount of private memory an app uses while operating in foreground and background states. The limits will differ depending on device performance. This means developers will have to pay closer attention to how their apps behave across different Android hardware.

Apps that consistently consume more memory than the permitted limits could face consequences on Google Play. Google says apps that fail to meet the requirements may see reduced visibility and publishing capabilities. The company plans to provide additional details about the exact thresholds later.

Bitmap Memory Is Also Part Of The New Rules

Google is also introducing requirements around bitmap memory. This focuses on the memory consumed by bitmap assets when an app is running in the background or when those assets are cached. Images can be a significant source of memory usage in mobile applications. Poorly managed image assets can increase an app’s memory footprint and potentially affect overall device performance. The new requirement encourages developers to optimise how their applications handle these assets rather than simply relying on devices with more RAM.

Google Wants More DEX Optimization

Another requirement focuses on DEX code optimization. Google says apps published on Google Play must be optimised with at least 25 percent coverage across optimisation, shrinking and obfuscation using tools such as R8.

These processes can help developers reduce unnecessary code and optimise the application package. They can also help reduce memory overhead and improve application efficiency. Developers therefore have several areas to address before the new requirements take effect.

Zero-Tap Sign-In Will Make Phone Transfers Easier

The bigger change for everyday Android users could be Zero-Tap Sign-In. Under the new requirement, apps that support user sign-ins will need to automatically restore the user’s login status when transferring data to a new Android device.

Google wants developers to use the Android Restore Credentials API to achieve this. Today, moving to a new phone can mean opening apps one by one and signing in again. Zero-Tap Sign-In is designed to reduce that friction.

Once implemented, supported apps should be able to restore the user’s authentication state during the device-transfer process. This could make setting up a new Android smartphone considerably faster.

Developers Need To Prepare For Zero-Tap Sign-In

The new sign-in requirement is not optional for apps that support user accounts. Google says apps that fail to meet the Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement could lose full publishing capabilities and optimal visibility on Google Play from April 2027. There is currently one notable exception. Games are exempt from the Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement.

For other apps, developers will need to integrate the Android Restore Credentials API and ensure that the login state can be restored correctly during a device migration. This is particularly relevant for apps that users rely on regularly. Banking, shopping, productivity, communication and other account-based apps could benefit from a smoother transition between devices.

What Does This Mean For Android Users?

For users, the changes should mostly happen behind the scenes. The memory requirements could encourage developers to build lighter and more efficient applications. This could be particularly useful on Android phones with limited memory.

The Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement could have an even more visible impact. Switching to a new phone should involve less repetitive setup if more apps automatically restore the user’s login status. However, the experience will ultimately depend on developers adopting the required APIs and meeting Google’s standards.

Google Is Giving Developers Time To Adapt

Google has not presented the new requirements as fixed forever. The company says the thresholds may change as Android hardware and developer use cases evolve. It has also assured developers that they will receive enough time to comply whenever the requirements are updated. The February 2027 deadline gives developers time to review their apps and optimise memory usage. The Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement follows in April 2027.

Conclusion

Google is making two significant changes to Google Play that could affect both developers and Android users. The first focuses on app performance and memory usage. The second aims to make switching to a new Android phone much easier.

The Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement could eliminate one of the most frustrating parts of setting up a new device. Users may no longer need to manually sign back into every supported application.

For developers, however, the next few months will be important. Apps will need to meet Google’s new memory and optimisation requirements from February 2027, while supported sign-in apps will have to prepare for Zero-Tap Sign-In by April 2027. If Google can get widespread developer adoption, moving between Android devices could soon become a much smoother experience.
